election that year, his senate seat would have become open. so the governor of massachusetts, the republican, mitt romney, would have been able to appoint somebody to fill john kerry's senate seat. the mts legislature totally dominated by democrats was cognizant that the governor would probably pick a republican to fill the seat if kerry got elected president. so the massachusetts state legislature decide d to change the law. they changed the law so that only a special election could fill a vacant seat. until then, the seat would have to be empty. mitt romney tried to veto that new law. but the legislature overrode his veto, thereby stripping mitt romney of his power to choose a replacement. that became a mute point because john kerry didn't win so he stayed on as senator. but then fast forward fife years. 2009. new president barack obama, the country embroiled in a big debate over national health reform. those against it were against it to the point of rage. and those wo who wanted it were excited to be on the cusp of achieving something they had failed to achieve for decade

term. when barack obama was elected the first time, they summed it up with this head line. "black man given nation's worst job." that was for the start of his first term. might be more apt for second term. the second term is when the job turns out to be a difficult job for presidents. if you go back to woodrow wilson in his second term trying to join the league of nations, that was pretty much the end of wilson. that was his second term. when it was truman in his second term during the korean war, he fired general mcarthur. the country responded by throwing parades for the general who got fired. and harry truman left office with approval ratings that dick cheney would kill for, but for everyone else would see that as a disaster. second terms are almost always seen as a disaster, then at least when the big disappointments happen and often the failures. when the soviet union beat us, when the soviet union beat the united states to put the first space satellite into orbit, when no nation had put something like that -- up in space and had it stick there and the soviets did it first with s

-span uses, we never have a democrat and republican -- elected democrat and elected republican debating an issue so the public can see it all in one nutshell. or even get to see over a bottle. you never had anybody rebut. because you are the echo chamber for the gop. let me get to the schools. nobody has been talking about jobs. jobs are the reason most kids go to school, to get a job. and they go get more schooling to get a better job. i know we want to live in a fantasy world where it's you want to be smart -- no,. they invest in themselves to get a return on that investment with a job. we have had 30 years since the reagan administration of supply- side economics. we have signed free trade agreements, no tariffs, their shipping jobs overseas. and we wonder why students don't go to school, because they know they cannot get a job. we have sent the dollar overseas. the older people and sold out the young people. now they claim it is the young people's all, they don't want to learn. host: i will leave it there and go back to what you said about c-span. we do have roundtable discussions f

this many times, presidential elections are referendums on the incumbent party and in that vein such as the case as i believe it is, then you have to say that it's a judge to by the electorate was not a tremendous perhaps lackluster but not so as to make him ineligible for rehiring. second, when the country is in a serious political deadlock of the kind that we are in now and it's happened in our history but it doesn't happen often it generally means that the deadlock is focused on a definition question of america, and the definition question faced in this country is that we are going to go towards a european style of social democracy or more towards the traditional conservative populism of jackson or ronald reagan. third, when the country manages to deal with such a deadlock or change such a deadlock as this it doesn't come to any other means. so you have a lot of red and that may be a good harbinger for your party but it doesn't say anything about how the country is going to move forward in terms of what you promote. so given all of that if you buy any of it, to what extent do

that when he was, i think, very prematurely awarded the nobel peace prize being elected president, he shows up at oslow before the nobel peace committee and delivers what i think is probably the only pro-war speech ever given in acceptance of the nobel peace prize. he argues for the necessity of war, but argues for the necessity of american power and for his responsibility to use american power in the world. i think that was a fairly remarkable speech. that coupled with the fact that there is the remote targeting of suspected terrorists says to me that people's expectations about him as a sort of passist leaning president was misguided. he's clearly not that, and nothing shows that more than his decision to go after bin laden. now, when i talk about main characters in the story, forgive me, because i don't think about these things in the way scholars do or maybe that you would doing an analysis for the military. i'm a story teller. to me, i'm interested in the arc of characters in the story. you've got admiral in a wheelchair, months after 9/11, who gets an opportunity to work in the white

, this is not an ancient pledge, these are pledges that get discussed every election cycle, democrats in the last two cycles have attacked all the republicans who took the pledge. so they have been reinforced in the fact that voters know that they made that commitment and they got elected making that commitment to voters. >> i just want to be precise on what you consider to be a tax increase. we know an increase in the marginal tax rates, that's a tax increase. but what about capping deductions? from your standpoint of the pledge, would that be considered a violation of the pledge to cap deductions, as some republican lawmakers are now suggesting? >> this is not a trick question. the pledge says no raising rates, no broadening the base unless rates come down dollar for dollar. the pledge is only two sentences but they are very clear. one of the reasons why eliminating deductions and credits, obama wants a trillion plus dollars worth of tax increase that way, is that if you do that, you've just got a tax reform for decades to come, because how do you reduce marginal tax rates so we can become competit

communities, which turned out in record numbers voted for and we made the difference in this election despite the fact that some states and a lot of people tried everything in the book to keep us from voting. so we do have some work ahead of us and i want to highlight a few things we can do. first of the debate over the fiscal class i'm a to ensure working families or protect it, which means that eviscerated the programs that help support working families including workforce investment and important training programs. we need to stress that this is not just an issue for our communities, before the country country. since african-americans, asian americans and latinos make up one third of the u.s. workforce today, a figure which will skyrocket in years to come. second, investing in the future of children. african-american and latino kids are the workforce of the future to the investments we make now will pay out dividends when i really need to in the decades to come as the baby boomers start to retire. they key is better education and especially important issues giving the communities of color

of pledges including the tax pledge. when i ran for re-election i said i'm not signing any pledges. i'm going to do what's right. i'm not going to get into the game or sign or not sign pledges. look, from president obama's perspective and the democrats perspective, part of the exercise is to get more revenues from the wealthy, there's lots of different ways to do that. it doesn't necessarily need to be rates although it could be. but there's lots of ways to do that. at least they're in the ball park with each other on the revenue side. the thing that i think should be more troubling to people who are watching this debate is the apparent, at least current lack of progress on the entitlement reform and restructuring side. >> that's where i wanted to pick this up. we can talk about how we're going to make up revenue but we're talking about to use governor pawlenty's metaphor the trim on the wings of his airplane but i'm afraid the news you made this morning soledad is dick durbin seems to be very clear he's not in on one of these wings as governor pawlenty describes him. spending will not be par
